Titanium

    Titanium is considered very hard for an element and can have tensile properties between 35,000 psi and 100,000 psi. Titanium hardness is comparable to some heat-treated alloys. Iodide titanium has a Vickers value of 90 VHN, unalloyed titanium is about 160 VHN and heated-treated titanium can reach 250 to 500 VHN. Commercial alloys can have around 320 VHN (see “Hardness Scale” section for definition of Vickers).

Uranium

    Uranium, although not as hard as titanium or metal alloys, is very useful for its hardness and density. Uranium can be made into alloys with titanium and molybdenum to be used as armor-piercing projectiles. They have the mass and physical properties that allow them to penetrate armor better and at longer distances. When tungsten rounds hit a target they can blunt, meaning some of the energy is wasted and deforms the round, unlike uranium’s self-sharpening properties.

Hardness Scales

    Hardness is not really a property but rather an artificial method used to compare materials to each other. So if material A can scratch material B, then A must be harder than B. If material C can scratch A, then on this particular hardness scale B falls between A and C. The Mohs scale is a system that compares the scratch resistance of materials compared to each other. Process

1 Purchase, or cut, a piece of 18-gauge sterling silver sheet metal 3/4 inch wide by 7 inches long.

2 File the edges of the metal until they are very smooth.

3 Place the sheet metal on a steel block. Using a ball peen hammer, stamp the letters with your design or message on the bracelet.

4 Form over bracelet mandrel using a plastic or rawhide mallet until you like the shape and it looks and feels like a bracelet. Using a plastic or rawhide mallet prevents you from marring the metal.

5 Using the ball end of a ball peen hammer or a bordering hammer, hammer the top edge of the bracelet to texture and thicken the metal. In addition to adding a nice decorative detail to your bracelet, hammering the edges of the bracelet will “harden” the metal so it will not lose shape when worn.

6 Turn the bracelet over and repeat for the bottom edge. File again to smooth if needed. Reshape over mandrel if needed.

Warnings & Tips

While this design is in sterling silver, any sheet metal — including copper, brass, nickel silver, gold fill and gold — can be used.

If you do not have a bracelet mandrel, many common household items can be used in substitution. Pipes come in a variety of sizes and can be used to form curves needed to make a bracelet. Many large shampoo bottles are shaped like a bracelet mandrel. These bottles can be filled with sand, dirt or cement and used for shaping.

Inexpensive ball peen and plastic hammers and letter/number stamping sets can be found in many sizes at the hardware store.

How to care for the jewelry?

To clean, scrub the piece using a soft toothbrush and mild dishwashing liquid with warm water. To remove tarnish from silver I recommend that you occasionally polish it with a Sunshine Polishing Cloth. This is a non-toxic cloth that contains non-scratch micro particles and chemical cleaners that bring the silver to a beautiful shine. It can also be used on gold, brass and copper.
